Yes, the muse was in an esoteric mood when he whispered this in my ear. He gets like that frequently. I have lots of his, uh, stranger forays in my files. I wrote Perhaps... with a definite character in mind for the third, but upon rereading it realized that I had not revealed the sex of that character (the omission of the name was deliberate as I was really interested in the mystery of what the agreement between Glorfindel and Mandos was, and the relationship between them that prompted the agreement). When I realized that, I liked the idea of leaving the sex of the third for each reader to decide for themselves. I've written stories in other fandoms with multiple choice endings, but this is a bit different as the whole story is nebulous. It can be many things to many readers. Since writing it, I have three or four different ones myself, but the original idea I had is still my fav. If you're interested, e/mail me and I'll share it, but only if you share how you view the third character. ;-P
